Q92 Promo Review - David Archuleta in Canton, OH!

“Can we find the youngest fan here?” the dj requested before David hit the stage. People were quick to point out a baby – clearly the youngest fan there. “Would it be rude to try to find the oldest?” The consensus was “yes!!” Looking around the crowd of 250+, there was a great mix of people: children and teenagers, younger adults, older adults. Mostly women (as we could hear in the Elevator sing-along!), but there were definitely men and boys mixed in with the crowd. And not men who were dragged in by their wives and girlfriends, but men who took the initiative to call in to win tickets, and those who even called shortly before the concert began to confirm the time so they wouldn’t miss it!

I really enjoyed seeing the excitement of the teen fans. Heard a story of girls “shaking and crying” after running into him before the show. At the meet and greet, another girl was sheepishly laughing and wiping away tears after meeting him. Saw older fans smiling with pride, almost like proud parents as he stood up there and sang beautifully.

The question of what I was doing there crossed my mind. Age-wise, I guess that I’d put myself in the demographic of David Cook, my favorite Season 7 Idol. So, at my age, the romantic attraction isn’t there… motherly feelings aren’t there… but I did put effort into winning the radio contest, taking a vacation day for work, and getting there early to get good seats. I recorded songs and took pictures and stayed until the very end of the meet and greet, just observing. So what was the pull that drew me to my second Archie show in a month’s time? What is it that helps Archie appeal to such a wide range of fans?

  1. The voice. David started out with “A Little Not Too Over You.” His voice, as always was stunningly clear and strong. Most artists actually don’t sound good live, but David sounds consistently wonderful. His cover of “A Thousand Miles” was another song that I felt really showed off his vocals and I am glad that he ended up deciding to add that one. These are the types of songs where you can just get lost in the unique, unmistakable tone of his voice.
  2. The Humor. Holy jeez, is Archie funny. While there are so many people who feel that they have to be crude or offend people to be funny, Archie can be hilarious, but no one leaves feeling bad or uncomfortable. He rambled on and on about extra credit…and about how it sounds like his voice has not changed (not true, Archie! You sound like a guy!). Interspersed in all this was his conscience speaking aloud and eventually convincing him to sing an extra song. You really have to see it to appreciate what is funny because it is nothing you can explain, so be sure to watch all the banter you can find from this show on You Tube!
  3. The Authenticity. I really get the sense that what you see is what you get with Archie. When he started getting tired during the Meet and Greet, you could see his smile wavering and his gaze kind of drifting to the side. I love this because you know that, when he is smiling so big (which is often), he really does mean it. His rambling, too.. I am a bit of a rambler and find it hard to finish thoughts and stay on target in my speech and I have developed techniques to hide this tendency.. he embraces it, though, and makes it work for him. Is he unintentionally funny, or has this become his style of humor? Who knows, but it just works because it is him.
  4. The Growth. Elevator was a definite peak in this show; be sure to check this one out if you have not. Archie was totally in his element as he invited the crowd to sing along. “This side of the room! Now this side!” Scolding us that we were not loud enough and ordered us to do it again. “Guys!” Taking advantage of the awkward moment of maybe one guy singing to get everyone laughing again… Yes, Archie was fun! During Idol Season 7, I recognized Archie’s talent from the beginning, but my main complaint was that he peaked too early (I felt Imagine was his best) and didn’t keep my interest. However, I can say now that he is an interesting performer and Elevator from Canton is just a great example. I suspect that part of noticing how interesting he is comes from a viewpoint shift, getting to “know” who he is more and not being clouded by any competition between him and Cook. However, I also think he has grown as a performer, for sure.

I also have to say the Archie community is pretty cool and accepting. Got to hang out with a couple cool fans - @emily4archie, her cool mother, and @y_j_fan. No one I have met during my last two concerts has (openly) looked down on me for being a Cook fan. LOL

In conclusion, screw age stereotypes and misguided analyses on personal characteristics that make people his fans. Archie is made to appeal to the masses. Jive, get him on the radio and promote him!

**One more thought.. the word that came to mind to describe Melinda, his new manager, was "take charge." She kept things moving and, while she was pretty tiny and didn't seem mean, she didn't have the demeanor where you would dare push her around!

  1. Awesome post, I wish I'd been able to meet you at the concert!

As a diehard Archuleta fan, it's so cool to read a Cook fan's perspective on his new music, so thank you! Although I was initially "crushed" :) that "our" David didn't win Idol, the respect and friendship between the two has won me (& other fans) over, so I'm not surprised you were welcomed with open arms!

I bet they even do another show together someday! Thanks again for a great post!

  2. Thanks so much for a wonderful synopsis of what it's like to see David live. I've seen him quite a bit as an avid fan of his, but I always wonder what other people think. I believe that many people disregard him due to his age and Idol connection. I appreciate your open-mindedness to listening to him. And yes, I have met some absolutely amazing people through my love of David's music. Thanks so much for your perspective! Hope to see you on David's next tour! :)

  3. Thanks so much for this awesome blog! Perfect timing as I've been talking with friends today about the whole "David Archuleta -fans of all ages- phenomenon." I'm a David fan for life & fit into the "mom" category as my oldest is 19! Btw~ I like & respect David Cook and I'm looking forward to hearing his new music, especially his new collaborations with Dave Hodges! I'm glad you were able to go to the Canton M&G. I would have loved to have made the trip and been there as well. Pure David-Banter-Bliss at Pete's with awesome vocals, too! :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts & the experience! Loved it! I'll be linking others to your blog! :)

  5. thanks for the great read, i think the biggest validation of david's musicality and his amazing voice is the fact that the Mormon Tab Choir has invited him to be their special guest for the christmas program. If anyone knows about good voices and musical talent it is that group...huge honor for david.

  6. I really enjoyed reading your recap, so thank you very much! You managed to really capture a lot of what so many Archies love about David. BTW, lots of us are Cook fans too. I bought his debut CD, saw him in concert and plan to buy his next CD too.

While his new manager is very assertive, I'm not sure what value is gained from the snippy comments back to fans about how they should do more promoting. On the other hand, I'd love it if SHE would do more promoting! :)

  7. I'd just like to say that I'm one of David's Grandma fans. I'm 69 and have a grandson his age. I've loved his voice and his sweet personality since I saw him in the first audition of Amer. Idol, and I nearly wore out the redial on my phone voting for him. I jokingly tell me confused friends and family that I have a "Grandma Crush" on him. That means you feel about him like you would one of your own grandchildren, as you said, nothing romantic. I just admire him and his example to people, young and old, so much. Also, I think he has one of the best voices I've ever heard, and I go way back. My own Mother was a singer and traveled with a band during the Big Band days, so I've heard all of the greats. I rank David right up there with all of them. I just hope I live long enough to see him in maybe 10 or 15 years. I'm hoping for a Jazz/R&B album someday. But, whatever he puts out, I'll be first in line to buy, not only for myself, but for my granddaughters, friends, other family members, and even strangers on the street if they want one. Anything to help him succeed and keep him recording.

  8. How refreshing to read your thoughts & impressions after seeing David Archuleta perform live. What you observed & all the qualities you described are truly authentic & exactly what makes David special & sets him apart as an artist & human being. I've been his fan since Idol & while it did break my heart that he didn't win the title of American Idol, it didn't take long for him to prove to me he was sincerely happy for his friend, David Cook, and his positive attitude & behavior in the way he handled himself in the days that followed helped me to deal with my emotions at the time. David continues to amaze me every single day & I'm so proud to be one of his archangels. Thank you so much for sharing with us & I hope to meet you some day at one of David's amazing concerts. :)

  9. love your review..As a David A's fan, I am always blown away by his every performance, acoustic or not , since then until now. His sense of humor is what makes him so amazingly amazing - and he's not even really trying to be funny. I just luv the guy.

  12. Love your recap. And as for Melinda yeah she wants us to do the promo for David. Not that I mind doing that but she gets paid to do it. So far I am not impressed with her at all.

  13. Thank you for your recap. It makes me smile that a Cook fan would take the time to do a recap on a show by the "other David". Am glad you enjoyed David and shares what we have seen from the start:)

  14. This is a great read...thank you for your objective breakdown of seeing David! I too was a fan of both Archie and Cook during AI7. I knew it would be the 2 of them until the end, and was happy for Cook, but I was rooting for Archie to go all the way. Since Idol, I have come to appreciate both of them even more. For me, Archie is a phenomenal talent with a heart and sense of humor to match and I think he is VERY special. It's awesome that he and Cook consider themselves good friends, and likewise, it's great to see the fans come together (for the most part). :)

  15. "You really have to see it to appreciate what is funny because it is nothing you can explain"

    This.

Thanks for your lovely promo review.
    Very nicely written.
Also loved the Holy Jeez. :)
p.s. Once you see David in concert, it's very difficult to control the urge to see him again, and soon. Hope to see you at a show.

  16. Anonymous-- I agree with you on Melinda. I am unfortunately not impresses either. I have seen her tweet too many times where she's telling the fans to contact the radio stations, i.e, Ryan Seacrest and ask why he doesn't play David's music. She is the one with the supposed connections and she is the one working for David. following him around doing crowd control is not gonna help him in the end. They have security guards to do that. She needs to get out there and promote the heck out of David and his album. TV--- jhowever cheesy, I think a performance on Dancing with the Stars might bring some volume to his sales , or even much better yet, Glee. Charice got on there, surely David would do well and get ALOT of exposure. I can think of a million ways David can get some good promo. The only problem is I have not connections. Also, he needs radio play. Melinda needs to get to work.

  19. I think it's a bit self rightous to suggest that there's something wrong with women over their 20's that dare think that David's hot. So what if he is? God made him hot, deal with it.

  20. Yup, I've always appreciated beauty. Be it male or female. If ya got it, ya got it, and "our David" has it! LOL!

  21. BTW, GREAT review. I love how you said you kinda stood back and observed the whole experience of David in his "zone". He's so real. Thanks for seeing him as so many of us have and posting an awesome, spot-on observation of David's fantastic fanbase of many ages!

  22. Anonymous, the blog isn't meant to be about judging people; it's about what about this artist appeals to me. I think that he has many characteristics that can appeal to a wide range of people. I think there is potential for controversy any time people write or talk about things like age, but I really wanted to talk about the variety of ages that he appeals to, so I took that risk and shared things from my perspective. While I didn't do any kind of research and don't have data to back this up, I suspect that age might be one factor (in general) that may make people emphasize certain characteristics over others in determining that they love David.

He is an attractive young man (inside and out); I will give you that.
